WELCOME, and thanks for visiting Semar!
SEMAR IS AN INTERNATIONAL PUBLISHING CONCERN specialising in high quality editions in humanities and social sciences and is the only publishing house in the world to use materials manufactured with conservation criteria that guarantee its publications both sustainability and an unprecedented durability. This direct intervention on structural factors affecting the ageing of a paper-based work has changed the focus of attention from conservation to prevention and has led the company twice being awarded, in 1988 and 1989, the Premio Cultura of the Italian Presidency of the Cabinet, while creating wide interest with international centres for the study of preservation of cultural property. The cross-cultural editorial line of the house aims for a better understanding among people by a deeper knowledge of their mutual culture, ideas, traditions and beliefs in a dialog intended to stimulate cultural diversity. Resolute in its quest to carry out a cultural action in the widest sense of the word, Semar intends to grant each work the possibility to becoming, over the course of time, a historical witness, whilst also recognising the consumer's right to durability of the purchased product. Besides the use of high quality materials, the publishing house, whose motto is Ut durent, places particular emphasis on the selection of content and on product design. All materials employed by Semar throughout the production cycle, besides complying with the ISO 9706 requirements on permanence of paper, take into account the whole production cycle of the book as integral part of an environmentally sustainable policy. Materials are selected and used according to an in-house patented procedure to confer a durability that ensures a gradual and homogeneous ageing process: inks with low concentration of acidity and lead; strings, twines and binding studied for durable conservation, including the most recent findings on the high pollution emissions given off by traditional types of glue used in the bookbinding industry. Semar diversifies the use of materials according to the obsolescence of the product, while keeping clean production and zero waste as an aim in sight. . Supporting ISO 14001 and Environmental Management. Semar is Fully Committed to the Preservation and Conservation of Our Cultural Heritage and of the Environment. . . . The writings in our publication do not represent any consensus of beliefs or ideologies. We do not expect that readers will sympathize with all the feelings and the ideas they find here. Some of our authors may flatly disagree with others: but we hold that while keeping clear of mere vagaries, Semar can do more to inform the public opinion by a broad hospitality to divergent ideas that it can by identifying itself with one school. Semar does not accept responsibility for the view expressed in any writing, signed or unsigned, which appears in its pages: what it does accept is the responsibility for giving them a chance to appear here. . SEMAR is a mythological character of the Javanese shadow theatre (wayang). He symbolizes the undivided, unity, the divine mystery. He lives in the realm of the ‘heart’ from which feelings flow. He marks a temporary upset of the natural order of the universe by appearing when the main character, smarting from the human condition, calls upon the divine intervention. He is a clown, a cosmic servant who deals, with irreverence, in heroes’ and lords’ matters alike; his temperament prevails on their wisdom. Semar reveals to the audience the true meaning of what is happening on the stage by rendering the courtly language into ordinary, everyday speech. .
